Alright, Ria, thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I’ve been an AFAA-certified Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor for over 18 years and became a Comprehensive Pilates Practitioner in 2020. I launched my business, Elevate Fitness Studio, a year ago, and I truly believe the timing was perfect for me. My experience working in a physical therapy clinic as a Personal Trainer and Pilates Instructor was invaluable in shaping my approach to fitness. It taught me how to meet people wherever they are on their wellness journey. Starting my studio allowed me to create a space that meets my clients’ unique needs, and my business has been steadily growing since then. I wouldn’t change a thing—it all fell into place at the right time.
Ria, before we dive into more of these questions, could you share more about your background and what you do?
I’ve been passionate about the fitness industry for over 18 years. My journey began as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor in a small gym, where I discovered my love for helping others. This eventually led to an interest in rehabilitative exercise, which I pursued while working in a physical therapy clinic as a trainer and technician. During this time, I trained as a rehabilitative Pilates Instructor with Polestar and gained invaluable experience working with patients and clients.
In November 2023, I opened Elevate Fitness Studio—a space tailored to individual needs. The studio is all about creating a personalized and supportive environment where clients can achieve their health and wellness goals.

What’s worked well for you in terms of finding new clients?
Word of mouth has been my best source for attracting new clients. Positive referrals from happy clients who’ve seen results have been a game-changer for my business. To encourage referrals, I offer a free session for each new client a current customer refers. This approach not only generates new leads but also strengthens my connection with my existing clients.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Like many small business owners, I faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. I lost most of my clients, and it was an incredibly tough period. However, I adapted by pivoting to a virtual business model. I started offering virtual training sessions and created an on-demand video library of workouts available through my website via subscription. These changes not only kept my business afloat during that time but have remained an essential part of what I offer today.
