Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ella Santiago. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ella, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
For me, cooking has always been more than just preparing a meal—it’s about storytelling and connection. Growing up in a multicultural family, I was exposed to a wide variety of cuisines, each carrying a piece of my heritage.
I learned the fundamentals of cooking in my grandmother’s kitchen, watching her mix ingredients with such care and intuition. But it wasn’t until I traveled extensively that I truly began to understand the artistry behind global cuisine. Each region I visited offered new techniques, ingredients, and traditions that shaped my style.
Ella, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Ella Santiago, a professional chef and culinary educator based in San Francisco. I specialize in creating fusion dishes that blend elements from different cultures to tell a unique story on the plate.
Through my cooking classes and workshops, I aim to share the beauty of cultural exchange and inspire people to experiment in their own kitchens. I also work closely with local farmers and artisans to ensure that my dishes highlight fresh, sustainable ingredients.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Absolutely. I think many people underestimate the emotional labor that goes into culinary arts. Food is deeply personal, and creating dishes that resonate with people involves more than just technical skill—it’s about pouring your heart into every detail.
The long hours, the constant push for perfection, and the pressure to innovate can be challenging, but seeing someone’s face light up after tasting your dish makes it all worthwhile.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
“The Flavor Bible” by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg has been a game-changer for me. It’s an incredible resource for understanding flavor pairings and how to elevate dishes to the next level.
I’ve also found inspiration from traveling and learning directly from home cooks around the world. Their stories and techniques have been invaluable in shaping my approach to food.
