Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Arjun Patel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Arjun, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
As a child, I was fascinated by the way spaces could tell stories. Growing up in Mumbai, I was surrounded by a dynamic mix of traditional and modern architecture that sparked my imagination.
I pursued formal training in architecture at the University of London, but the true learning happened on the job. Working under master architects taught me how to merge functionality with creativity. It’s a process of constant learning—each project presents a unique challenge that broadens my understanding of design and its impact on people.
Arjun, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Arjun Patel, an architect specializing in sustainable urban design. My focus is on creating eco-friendly spaces that improve quality of life while minimizing environmental impact.
From green skyscrapers to public parks, I aim to craft environments where people can thrive. My firm also collaborates with local communities to ensure that every design is meaningful and responsive to its cultural context.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Absolutely. Architecture requires immense patience. Projects often take years to complete, and every step—designing, budgeting, building—requires collaboration and problem-solving.
Many people don’t realize that architects have to balance creativity with pragmatism. It’s not just about designing something visually appealing; it’s about ensuring that it serves its purpose and stands the test of time.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
“The Timeless Way of Building” by Christopher Alexander deeply influenced my philosophy. It emphasizes designing spaces that feel alive and human.
I’ve also been inspired by traveling to cities like Kyoto and Copenhagen, where thoughtful urban planning has created harmonious living environments.
